My 10 Self-Care Tips For The Festive Season
Dec 23, 2023I don’t know about you but Christmas this year feels different. Whether it’s the cost of living, the loss of loved ones, the anxiety and pressure to keep up with the Jones’s, spending time with family you don’t get along with or simply feeling burnt out. I want to let you know it’s okay and perfectly natural.
The holidays and this time of year, in general, are here for you to have a reset. While I appreciate it’s also very busy for many of us, here are some things you can do to give yourself some love through the holidays.
-
Take advantage of sleeping in! Sometimes the simplest things are often the best things to feel refreshed, balanced and recharged.
-
Digital detox. Whilst it might be tempting to keep on scrolling through social media to see what others are up to or post out of FOMO. Put your phone away, and take a moment to be present, you don't need to see anyones gifts or anaemic roast potatoes. Respectfully.
-
Eat nutritiously and stay hydrated. Now while I’m not averse to Christmas chocolates or eating cheese by the pound this time of year, try and opt for some balance. A piece of fruit to start the day and drinking water throughout will help your mood.
-
Reduce alcohol. It’s no secret alcohol is a depressant so if you’re already feeling low or overwhelmed, it’s only going to make you feel worse. Of course you can enjoy a glass of two, just be mindful of how you feel whilst drinking. If it’s to numb yourself take a step back. Finding a quiet space and doing a few minutes of breath-work may also help too.
-
Send Love. Take a moment to tell your loved ones how much you love them and the impact they made in your life this year. Whether it’s your dog, family, partner or friends. This act of kindness and gratitude goes a long way ♥ď¸
-
Morning journaling. This is key for those who are feeling overwhelmed or feeling anxious. Take 5-10 minutes before you look at your phone to journal. Click here for some prompts to help you on your way.
-
Take a few moments for yourself through the day. If you’re around triggering family members or feeling overwhelmed, leaving the room, doing some heart breathing will allow you to decompress and re-energise. It’s perfectly okay to take time for yourself as and when you need.
-
Scream therapy! A good friend actually taught me this! When you’re somewhere private, put a sleeve over your hand, cover your mouth and simply scream as loud as you can. The sound will be muffled and it will allow any overwhelm, sadness, frustration, anger to come out. Repeat as many times as you need.
-
Slow down with a stretch. There are many short videos online where you can take a few minutes to feel into your body and be gentle with yourself.
- Dress up for yourself. Whether you’re spending time with family or friends, make an effort for you. It might sound silly or obvious but putting on your favourite playlist, and getting ready with your favourite outfit (even if it’s joggers), jewellery or perfume will make you feel brighter - especially when you set that intention that it’s for you.
Two of my bonus ones are curling up on the sofa with a blanket putting on your favourite childhood movie and allowing yourself to release any emotions that come up.
I hope that helps my loves, this time of year can be hard for so many of us but you have got this! Just a few simple additions to your day will make the world of difference. Let me know which of these you tried over on instagram! I love hearing from you ♥ď¸
